Are You Dieting The Right Way?
Posted by Sarah Leroy in weight loss on August 16th, 2009
Is there really the right and the wrong way to lose weight? Off course there is. If you lose weight, but are not successful at keeping it off, you’re obviously doing something wrong. And when you regain more weight than you initially lost, do you think that’s right? In this article we are going to show which way is the right way.
If we look at the statistics, we see alarming numbers - two thirds of American adults are overweight. A considerable percentage of these people try very hard to lose weight, but with very little success. Less 5% are successful in long term weight loss. It seems that mainstream diets aren’t doing what they’re supposed to do. Why?
The reason why the majority of traditional diets don’t work is simple - they are so called reduction or starvation diets. Low fat, low carb, and low calorie diets all fall into this category. When starvation is imposed, our bodies deal with it appropriately. The way the body deals with starvation is the core reason why these diets don’t produce any long term results.
Our bodies have good mechanisms to cope with extreme calorie deficits that this diets impose. When you starve, your body goes into so called starvation mode. When this happens it will become energy saving fat-storing machine, trying to survive on as little energy as possible. You know when this happens when you hit the plateau.
It gets even worse when you stop dieting. Your body will still try to store as much fat as possible, because you can’t turn off starvation mode that quickly. This means you will gain weight faster than ever before and you’ll probably end up weighing more that before the diet.
The bottom line, starvation is not the answer. There are much better ways to lose weight. One of them is a relatively new method called calorie shifting or calorie cycling.
Calorie shifting works by tricking the metabolism into working fast and burning stored fat reserves. You do that without starving yourself. You eat six proper small meals a day. Off course, no junk food. You are even allowed to have cheat days, when you can eat whatever you want. Easy to follow and it works.
